Kambria Open Innovation Hub, INSEAD student visit

Yesterday, Kambria and sister company, OhmniLabs, hosted 28 students from INSEAD in our Silicon Valley Open Innovation Hub. If you’re not familiar with INSEAD, it is among the highest-ranked business schools in the world. Its MBA program was ranked first globally in 2016 and 2017 by the Financial Times and second in the 2018 ranking. INSEAD’s dual-degree Executive MBA with Tsinghua University is ranked first globally by the Financial Times. Most of the students visiting worked previously in the consulting industry and are currently pursuing their business degree in Paris. Representing over 18 countries, our INSEAD guests are among the best and brightest and it was our pleasure to welcome them to the Kambria community.

Our visit started with a tour of the OhmniLabs robotics manufacturing facility. Students were able to see the lean production process first-hand and learn more about robotics and AI innovations. They were extremely impressed with our execution and vision for robotics & AI and eager to gain more insight.

Students then sat down with Kambria CTO and co-founder, Jared Go, and Head of Special Projects, Dhana Pawar, for a discussion about cobots, the open source model, challenges & opportunities in the space. We received some great questions about Kambria’s approach and why we elected to open-source our platform. As we discuss in our Open Innovation Manifesto, how we innovate is as important as the innovations themselves. Kambria is committed to removing the waste and inefficiencies in the current robotics and AI ecosystem in order to accelerate innovation.

Students also learned more about how we work with governments, academia, and corporations in executing our vision. They also got a deeper understanding of the startup landscape in Silicon Valley and learned more about what it takes to succeed. Because they are savvy and business-minded, students also drilled down on specifics about OhmniLabs, such as pricing, core use cases, the lean manufacturing process, IP protection, Japan as a market, the scope of the telepresence robotics market, and more.

INSEAD visits KambriaEveryone enjoyed the interactive, information-packed Q&A session, which also included questions for Jared about his personal journey in helping to build both OhmniLabs and Kambria. Students were also interested in Dhana’s background as an investor. She loved sharing her startup lessons and war stories with the group and the importance of selecting a great team. “Having the right idea or investment alone is not good enough. It’s the team that can make or break your company. If your team does not have the chops to execute and take your idea to the next level, then it’s not going to work. Picking your team is the single best thing you can do.” Great insights, Dhana, and we’re glad you’re on the Kambria team!
